Our Heritage and Founder
Over a decade ago, Dr. Fitzpatrick’s scientific interests in maximizing improvement in topical formulations to reverse photoaging led him to the development of his own unique skin care line and formulation of a new aesthetic and pharmaceutical company, SkinMedica. Based on the excellent results he achieved in his clinical practice and the numerous requests from other physicians for research-based, clinically proven products, he decided to make the SkinMedica skin care system available to all physicians’ patients. Dr. Fitzpatrick is a progressive leader in Dermatology. After his undergraduate education at Princeton University, he went on to Emory University Medical School where he was elected to Alpha Omega Alpha, the medical honor society for academic excellence. Dr. Fitzpatrick completed his internship in Internal Medicine at the University of Southern California and attended the University of California at Los Angeles to complete his specialty training in Dermatology. Board Certified by the American Board of Dermatology and the American Board of Cosmetic Surgery, he is a member of the American Society of Dermatologic Surgery, American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and a Fellow of the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery. He served as President of the American Society for Laser Medicine and Surgery in 2000-2001. He is the recipient of the 2004 Leon Goldman Memorial Lectureship Award from the American Society for Laser Medicine and Surgery; the 2005 Ellet H. Drake Lectureship Award from the American Society of Laser Medicine and Surgery (ASLMS); the recipient of the Richard Webster Lectureship Award from the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery in 2001; and the EnvisiON Award from the American Society of Cosmetic Dermatology and Aesthetic Surgery for life-time achievement. He was the recipient of the 2008 Caroline and William Mark Memorial Award from the American Society for Laser Medicine and Surgery. Most recently, he received the 2010 Presidential Citation from the ASLMS for “Master Clinician, Pioneer, Inventor, Teacher, Entrepreneur, Visionary, Friend.” Dr. Fitzpatrick’s surgical interests led him into the field of laser surgery. He was instrumental in the development of several medical lasers and laser procedures, including laser resurfacing of the skin with the UltraPulse CO2 laser. He is the author of medical textbooks on laser surgery, as well as the author of numerous scientific articles. He lectures all over the world and has trained thousands of physicians in laser techniques. Dr. Fitzpatrick is currently practicing at Goldman Butterwick Fitzpatrick & Groff Cosmetic Laser Dermatology, in La Jolla, CA. Dr. Fitzpatrick is a Clinical Professor in the Division of Dermatology at University of California-San Diego School of Medicine (Voluntary).
